Why you shouldn't get sick in a cold snap - it can take ambulances twice as long to respond

It's common knowledge that it's better to get sick on a weekday because hospitals aren't as well staffed on weekends. Now, a new study suggests you may want to hang on for milder weather as well.
For scientists have found that every degree dropped in temperature slows an ambulance's response time by more than one per cent.
A combination of increased demand and treacherous road conditions are behind the effect.
Ambulances can take twice as long to respond during a cold snap
Ambulances can take twice as long to respond during a cold snap
Experts looked at how the weather affected daily ambulance call-out and response times in Birmingham over a five year period between 2007 and 2011.
They found that every one degree fall in air temperature corresponded to a 1.3 per cent drop in performance, as the number of 999 calls increased call-out and adverse weather conditions worsened road travel.
The ambulance service have a target of reaching 75 per cent of immediately life-threatening (category A) calls within eight minutes.
Over the 1,705 days the study's experts looked at, 794,137 emergency calls were received, of which 282,978 were category A.
This period included several weather extremes such as the floods of July 2007 and the very cold Decembers of 2009 and 2010.

Their analysis revealed a gradual rise in daily ambulance call-outs from an average of 400 in 2007 to just over 500 in 2011 - an increase of 23 per cent.
Both call-out and response times were significantly affected by extremes of weather.
In December 2010, which was the coldest December on record for more than a century, with an average temperature of -10C, the average daily number of call-outs was 20 per cent higher than in November 2010.
The target ambulance response time fell below 50 per cent three days in a row.
Rather than eight minutes, the average time taken to arrive was 15 minute.
The results showed that for every one degree fall in air temperature there was a 1.3 per cent drop in ambulance performance.
'Cold waves' are likely to have as great an impact on ambulance call-out and response times as heat waves, with experts warning that climate change will prompt further temperature extremes.
Lead author of the study, Professor John Thornes, from the Health Protection Agency, said: 'The impact of climate change will primarily be seen through more incidents of extreme cold and hot weather, and therefore it will be useful to examine adaption measures such as the use of winter tyres and more flexibility in the number of ambulances available for operation during extreme weather episodes.
'Furthermore, with colder winters and hotter summers, the challenges associated with achieving summer/winter response times, particularly due to increases in call volume, are likely to increase.'

Sofia's family deserves justice': Private investigator 'uncovers new evidence' in the unsolved murder of Sofia Vergara's older brother

Nearly 17 years after her brother was gunned down in their native Colombia, Sofia Vergara may finally get some closure in her sibling's death.
A new report suggests fresh evidence has been uncovered in the unsolved murder of Rafael Jose Vergara.
Private investigator Marcos Rubio has connected the crime to a former drug kingpin, and is urging local police to re-open the case, according to the National Enquirer.

Sofia was 24, her older brother 26, when he was gunned down on August 12, 1996, in Barranquilla, according to the report.
Marcus Rubio tells the tabloid he discovered rumours Rafael was having an affair with a woman who was dating crime boss Diego Leon Montoya Sanchez at the time.

'All his friends told him to break it off, but Rafael wouldn't listen. A lot of people believe that the mobster found out about Rafael and his girl and ordered the hit,' he said.
The investigator claims he has learned of three witnesses at the scene who were 'afraid to talk at the time, or may have been blackmailed'.

He says authorities never looked into the connection.
An Enquirer reporter accompanied the investigator as he presented his evidence to a high-ranking Barranquilla police official.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the publication: 'Times have changed and citizens are now less frightened about bringing criminals to justice. The killers of Sofia Vergara's brother are still at large. But with this new information, it’s possible his murder could be solved.'
Marcus Rubio is hopeful. He continued: 'Sofia has said that her family deserves justice in her brother's murder, and after all these years she should get the answers she's longed for.'
'It's time the police re-open this case so Sofia can finally get justice for her brother's brutal killing,' he said.

A spokesman for Sofia has yet to reply to MailOnline's request for comment.
The actress has been candid about the tragedy in interviews.
In a 2006 sit-down with Fredericksburg.com, she spoke of her understanding of how the events leading to Rafael's death unraveled.
'He was kidnapped two years before and he paid the ransom and they tried to kidnap him again two years later,' she said. 'By that time he was already carrying guns and had left his bodyguards in the house. They shot him when he went to reach for his gun.'
It's not the only family tragedy to have affected the Modern Family actress. Her younger brother Julio was reportedly deported from the U.S in May after being arrested over 30 times on drug related charges.
In 2010, he was arrested five times in Dade County, Florida, on various charges including possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession with intent to supply.

On April 8, 2011, he was arrested again for pot possession, held for five days in a county correctional facility before being released into the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
He was deported back to Colombia in May of that year, according to RadarOnline.
Sofia, now 40, originally moved to Miami, Florida, from her native Colombia back in 1994 following the end of her marriage to her high school sweetheart.
Some of her family moved a short while later, including Julio, who took Rafael's death hard, she has said.
In 2011, she told Parade magazine: 'After Rafael died, Julio had a rough time. They were very close.'
Sofia has remained tight with her family despite her meteoric rise to fame (she was named the highest-earning woman in U.S. television by Forbes last year, with an estimated $19million in earnings for the previous 12 months).

The actress, who is engaged to businessman Nick Loeb and also has a 20-year-old son, Manolo, from her first marriage, has resolved to take care of her family and move past her personal tragedies.
'With so many bad things happening, it creates a tough skin. You just have to take a deep breath and keep on going - if not for yourself, then for everybody you love,' she said.

Will Maria Shriver replace Barbara Walters on The View? Firm denials that ABC chiefs are looking at replacing the 83-year-old news legend on her own show

ABC news legend Barbara Walters has no plans to retire aged 83 - amid reports that TV chiefs plan to replace her with Maria Shriver.
The National Enquirer today claimed that ABC bosses are 'eyeing up' California's former First Lady to step into Barbara's shoes on the popular daytime show.
However, an ABC source told MailOnline they had 'never heard that rumour', with another insider insisting there was 'absolutely no truth' to the report.
The Enquirer reported that Barbara - who was forced off air due to chickenpox following a nasty fall - was 'furious' that ABC were already looking at her replacement.
But the magazine said Barbara - who is  executive producer on The View, the show she created in 1997 - was 'as competitive as ever' and had no plans to give up her day job.
Maria, 57, resigned as an NBC news anchor when her estranged husband, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was elected governor of California in 2003.
However, after filing for divorce in 2011 after Schwarzenegger admitted to fathering a son with their maid, sources say Maria is 'itching' to get back to work.
According to the magazine, Barbara's daughter Jacqueline has been urging her hard-working mother to retire, even though the veteran journalist feels like she 'still has a lot of pep in her step.'
Barbara yesterday announced that she will be returning to her seat on The View on Monday - five weeks after she fell and suffered a concussion before catching the chicken pox.
'I'm back!' the host wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. 'Starting Monday I'm returning to @theviewtv. Ladies - thanks for keeping my seat warm!'
She also called into a live taping of the show on Tuesday.
'Like it or not, I'm coming back on the show again,' Barbara said. 'No more chicken pox. I haven't been contagious for a while, but they wanted me to have rest, and I've had enough rest and I'm ready to come back.'

Barbara was hospitalized after falling and cutting her head at a pre-inaugural party in Washington on January 19. She was later diagnosed with chicken pox, which typically affects children.
In an earlier telephone interview on the show, she complained that all she can do now is rest in her apartment and wait for Calamine lotion to calm the pox.
'After all these years all we have is Calamine lotion!' the host said.
'We have Facebook, we have Twitter and we have Calamine lotion!'
The journalist was released from the hospital on January 29 and continued her recovery at her Manhattan home.
'I watch you every day, I talk back to you, I complain to you, I join the Hot Topics, I do everything,' she said about how she is staying involved in the talk show during her illness.

Though chicken pox is common in young children, it can be serious in older people because of the possibility of complications like pneumonia.
Barbara explained during her call that she came into contact with someone who had Shingles, and as a result, she contracted the disease.
'I've been a little weak. I'm not in any pain. I'm not scratching,' she said.
Barbara was transferred to a New York hospital after falling and hitting her head at the home of the British ambassador Sir Peter Westmacott over the inauguration weekend.
She said: ''What happened was that I had a temperature and had the chicken pox and didn't know it and so when I was in Washington for the inauguration weekend, I fainted at the British embassy. If you're going to faint, it's a very elegant place to faint.'

She issued a statement that was read by her co-star Whoopi Goldberg on The View on January 22, and said: 'First and foremost, I want to thank all the people who have called, written and been concerned about me. I am most appreciative.
'I'm running a low grade fever and the doctors are keeping me in the hospital until my temperature is normal. I'm pleased to say that it is going in the right direction and I will be home soon.'

During more than three decades at ABC, and before that at NBC, her exclusive interviews with rulers, royalty and entertainers have brought her celebrity status.
In 1997, she created 'The View,' a live weekday talk show that became an unexpected hit.
Barbara had heart surgery in May 2010 but returned to active duty on 'The View' that September, declaring, 'I'm fine!'
Even in her ninth decade, the ever-active star continues to keep a busy schedule, including appearances on 'The View,' prime-time interviews and her annual special, '10 Most Fascinating People.'

Meet the celebrities who'll plunge to ANY depth... But you'll need a lot of front to pull off 'extreme cleavage'!

So much for all the talk of 'the new demure.' When it comes to getting noticed on the red carpet, some celebrities are still prepared to plumb any depths to send those flashbulbs into a frenzy.
I’m talking about the fashion for dresses with necklines cut so low the wearer has to check her belly button for fluff before leaving the house.
Last Sunday night’s Oscars — and the Brits and the Grammy awards shortly before that — were awash with nubile young starlets (and one or two old enough to know better) who were all flashing a lot more than just their smiles on the red carpet.
Britney Spears and Minne Driver
Britney Spears and Minne Driver
Fit me baby, one more time: Britney Spears' revealing Michael Cinco dress attracts too much interest while Minnie Driver reveals why a super-slim figure isn¿t always enough to carry off a low cut dress
It’s certainly not a fashion for the fat, frumpy or faint-hearted. To carry off the extreme cleavage look you need to be determined, daring . . . and perhaps a little desperate.

Designer Julien Macdonald’s latest catwalk collection was full of slashed-to-the-waist dresses which, horrifying as this may sound, means it’s a look that will soon be filtering to a High Street near you.
If designer dresses can veer so easily into cheap and tacky territory, I shudder to think how the Primark version will look after pub closing.
Because this is a look that can go horribly wrong if you don’t follow a few hard-and-fast rules before you dare to bare — the single most important one being: make sure your boobs are up to the job.
Plunging necklines are all about showing the world what a crackingly perky pair you have, so it’s vital to take a good hard look in the mirror before you trade in your Per Una casuals for a bit of designer plunge.
Rule two: if your breasts are bigger than the average baby’s head, have surrendered to gravity, or have a space between them you could fit a bus through, then slasher fashion is a trend you’d do well to swerve.
In most cases, this style of dress means no bra, so if your chest is normally encased in a reinforced boulder holder, think twice before imagining a flimsy piece of fabric will provide the necessary level of support.
Holly Willoughby and Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow and Holly Willoughby
Don't try this at home: Holly Willoughby's squashed, uneven cleavage isn't the most alluring of sights... And neither is Gwyneth Paltrow's bony chest!
Double-sided fashion tape is a wonderful thing, but it’s not a miracle worker and can only do so much.
It may keep fabric in place on someone who is a size 0, but it’s almost certainly asking too much of it to do the same on a size 16.
You wouldn’t expect Blu-Tack to keep a mirror on a wall, would you? And bear in mind that you may have to sit down at some stage.
While sucking your stomach in works a treat when standing up, we all know it’s game over as soon as you sit down. A plunging neckline is meant to reveal a tanned and taut tummy, not pale and squishy rolls.
Finally, as some celebrity plunge wearers have shown, it’s important to leave a little to the imagination:never flash leg as well as cleavage.
Aim to look chic and seductive — not like a dancer searching for a pole. So, shoulders back, stomach in . . . and don’t forget to pack a cardi.

Paying homage to her High School Musical heyday! Ashley Tisdale cuts a youthful figure in a pair of pop socks

Her High School Musical co-stars have shed their wholesome images since the end of the franchise in 2008, but Ashley Tisdale has remained squeaky clean.
And the actress looked as though she could have just stepped off the set of teen trilogy when she was spotted in Studio City on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old was sporting a pair of youthful over-the-knee pop socks in an Aztec print as she ran some errands with her boyfriend Christopher French.

The patterned legwear poked out from the top of Ashley’s slouchy brown leather riding boots which were also thigh high.
Ashley was also sporting Daisy Dukes along with a cream knitted top and grey beanie hat, while toting an oversized white handbag.
Meanwhile her rocker boyfriend, who is the lead singer in the band Annie Automatic, was dressed casually in ripped jeans, a black T-shirt and matching unlaced trainers.

The pair have only been dating for a couple of months, but as they walked with their arms wrapped around each other it was clear they are both very smitten.
Ashley may have had a sunny disposition but the petite blonde has been feeling under the weather of late.
She is currently filming re-shoots for Scary Movie 5 and it seems the gruelling schedule left the star run-down, and as a result she has contracted an illness.
Ashley tweeted on Tuesday that she had lost her voice and matters hadn’t improved by the time Wednesday afternoon rolled around.

As well as her role in Scary Movie 5, out April 19, Ashley has been cast in Left Behind opposite Nicolas Cage and Chad Michael Murray.
The movie, which is scheduled to be released next year, will see Ashley portray Chloe Steele, the daughter of Nicolas’ character Ray.

Still going strong! Peter Facinelli joins girlfriend Jaimie Alexander for brunch after solo outing at the Oscars

He went solo to the glamorous Oscars parties.
But it seems that there is nothing wrong with Peter Facinell's romantic life.
It was not quite as glamorous as the Oscars but the Twilight star seemed happy as he enjoyed a sunshine brunch with his girlfriend Jaimie Alexander and their friends on Tuesday.

The actor walked the red carpet for Elton John's annual post Oscar bash alone on Sunday.
Sitting with a friend between them on their large table both Peter and Jaimie seemed engrossed in their table mates' conversation.

The former husband of Jennie Garth - the couple split in March - looked smart but dressed down in blue jeans with brown suede shoes and a grey cable knit jumper.
The  star did have to drag himself away from the engrossing conversation briefly and make mad dash to add money to his parking meter.
Jaimie on the other hand chatted away with a stunning female friend and the pair seemed like they were old friends with the 28-year-old listening intently to the conversation as she put jam on her toast.

Bringing some glamour to the game! David Beckham hits the red carpet for his first premiere... oh no, he's just arriving to play for Paris Saint-Germain

He attracts crowds of people wherever he goes, but he may not have been expecting the reception he got when he made his first start for new club Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
Showing up for the match against Marseille dressed in a dapper black suit and tie, the footballer was greeted by a full-on red carpet and crowds of cheering fans.
Looking more like a film premiere than a football match, David posed for photographs and signed autographs as he made his way into the Parc des Princes stadium.

Wife Victoria showed up to watch his debut for his new team at the weekend, but the former England captain seemed more excited for his first start.

And the team were obviously just as excited as he was, laying on an entire red carpet for the star, complete with barriers with the words 'Ici c'est Paris' printed on them.
Proving his international appeal, he was met by a sea of screaming fans, all jostling to get a glimpse of their idol as he made his way down the very lonely red carpet.

But far from looking awkward about the slightly excessive welcome, David grinned magnanimously as he walked down the carpet, pulling his suitcase behind him.
Looking just as suave as usual, the British footballer had obviously made an effort for his first start, and looked a little different to a fellow player who walked in front of him.
Seeming a little confused about the whole thing, the player wandered past the crowds with his head down and his hands in his pockets.

But it seems as if the full-on red carpet treatment might have been worth it, as the team came out on top, winning 2-0 to Marseille.
Even though it was a great start for the footballer, he managed to get involved in a mid-match bust up with the Ayew brothers.
The altercation resulted in David and Andre Ayew being booked, but nevertheless, the Brit left the pitch to huge cheers.

'We have decided to follow our muse': No Doubt cancel tour plans... so they can record new album

It is not usually the type of announcement that fills fans with joy.
But followers of No Doubt were delighted with their plan to cancel their latest tour, as they are heading back to the studio to record instead.
The hitmakers, who are lead by sex symbol singer Gwen Stefani, announced their decision on the Facebook page, with hundreds of fans posting messages of support for the group's decision.

'While we were traveling the world last year promoting Push And Shove, Gwen mentioned she was inspired to write new music.
'In December, around the time of our hometown shows, we discussed the idea of starting 2013 by getting back into the studio together.
'We did so in January and the new music started flowing with unexpected ease. After spending three years recording the last album, this new pace feels incredibly exciting.

Unsurprisingly their fanbase were delighted with the decision, though many mentioned they hoped their latest effort would be more like their classic sound.

Last year's Push and Shove was the first effort by the band in more than decade, with their previous album Rock Steady released away back in 2001.
The band formed in Anaheim, California in 1986, but it was not until a decade later that they broke through with 1996 smash hit Don't Speak.
They went on hiatus in 2003, when Stefani, 43, launched a highly successful career as a pop star, with hits such as Hollaback Girl and The Sweet Escape.

Jazzing up a dreary outfit with some animal magic: Victoria Beckham steps out in a pair of leopard print heels as she arrives back in London after Paris trip

She doesn't stray far from a black colour palette when it comes to her wardrobe but Victoria Beckham is a little more adventurous when it comes to her footwear.
The fashion designer had a spring in her step, thanks to a pair of leopard heels, as she jumped off the Eurostar in London on Monday after visiting husband David Beckham in Paris.
Victoria's statement heels jazzed up an otherwise understated outfit consisting of a pair of tight skinny jeans, a black satin blouse and a black coat.

And the shoes provided a welcome injection of colour to a dreary day as she swapped the gloomy Paris weather for the just as uninviting London drizzle.

Victoria was spotted heading into the Gare Du Nord earlier in the day to to catch the Eurostar back to London after supporting David during his debut for Paris St Germain.
And the designer certainly chose a typically chic travelling outfit, looking just as well groomed as she got off the train as when she'd got on earlier in the day.
She wore a perfectly applied face of make-up, including recently touched-up lipgloss as she arrived home.
